How the planner works

Enter your moving date, and the planner counts backwards to give each task a real date. It's set to the next July 1 by default, because many Québec leases end June 30 and July 1 is the busiest moving day of the year. Any date works.

Every move follows the same timeline:

WhenWhat to do
8 weeks beforeBook internet installation and movers. Check your current contracts' cancellation terms.
6 weeks beforeCompare insurance and internet plans for the new address.
4 weeks beforeTell your insurer the new address and date. Set up mail forwarding.
2 weeks beforeConfirm installation and moving times. Update your address with government services, your bank and your employer.
1 week beforePack, label and plan equipment returns. Charge your devices.
Moving dayTake photos and meter readings. Test your internet and alarm.
1–2 weeks afterReturn old equipment. Check your first bills. Confirm your insurance shows the new address.

Why start eight weeks out

Around July 1, installers and movers book up early. Booking eight weeks ahead gives you the best chance of getting the date you want, and time to find another option if you don't. Outside the busy season you may have more flexibility, but the early steps still save stress.

Checking cancellation terms early matters too. Some contracts require notice, and some charge a fee or expect equipment back. Knowing this before you book lets you plan the switch without paying for two services longer than you need to.

How to use the checklist

  • Catch up if you're late. If your move is less than eight weeks away, some dates will already be past. Do those tasks first, starting with internet installation and movers.
  • Keep your insurance continuous. Coverage should apply at the new address from the day you start moving in. Our tenant insurance guide explains what to ask.
  • Photograph both homes on moving day. Photos of their condition and your meter readings help settle questions about damage or final bills later.
  • Return equipment on time. Modems, TV boxes and some alarm equipment may need to go back to the provider, and providers may charge for equipment that isn't returned. Keep the receipt.

The dates are a planning guide. Your lease, providers and movers may need more or less notice, so check their terms. Our moving day checklist goes into more detail on each step.

Questions about
this calculator

Many Québec leases end June 30, so July 1 is the busiest moving day of the year. The planner uses the next July 1 as a starting point, but you can pick any date. The tasks and timing work the same way.

The planner suggests eight weeks before your move. Around July 1, installers book up early, so earlier is safer. If you're moving at a quieter time of year you may be able to book later, but it's worth checking availability early.

The planner puts it four weeks before your move, after you've had time to compare options at six weeks. Give your insurer your new address and moving date so your coverage follows you. After the move, check that your policy shows the new address.

You can still use the planner. Some dates will already have passed, so start with those tasks, especially booking internet installation and movers. The rest of the checklist still applies.
