What to compare

What to compare in an alarm system

Two systems with similar sensors can cost very different amounts over a few years. These six points show where the differences hide.

  • Who watches the alarmsA monitoring centre can call you and request help around the clock. With self-monitoring, alerts go to your phone and nothing happens until you act.
  • Equipment cost vs includedEquipment is sometimes offered at a low upfront cost in exchange for a monitoring contract. Find out who owns it and what happens to it if you cancel.
  • Contract length and renewalCheck the term, whether it renews automatically, how much notice you must give and how any early cancellation fee is calculated.
  • Installation and set-upA technician takes the guesswork out of placement and wiring, sometimes for a fee. DIY kits use adhesive mounts and app instructions. Test every sensor.
  • Sensors, cameras, smart featuresDoor, window and motion sensors are the backbone. Add smoke, CO and flood detection, cameras or a video doorbell based on what matters in your home.
  • Backup power and cellularA cellular connection keeps the system working if the internet goes down or a line is cut, and a backup battery keeps it running during a power outage.

DIY, monitored or fully installed?

The main difference is who responds when an alarm goes off, and what you commit to for that service.

Ways to pay less

Ways to pay less

Good protection doesn't have to mean a big monthly bill. Start with these.

  • Start with the essentialsCover your main doors and easy-to-reach ground-floor windows first, with smoke and CO detection. Add sensors later as you learn what your home needs.
  • Compare the total costAdd equipment, installation and monthly fees over the full contract. A low upfront price can cost more over time than buying equipment outright.
  • Ask your insurerSome insurers may offer a discount on home or tenant insurance for a monitored alarm or safety devices. Ask what qualifies and what proof they need.
  • Avoid false alarm feesSome municipalities charge a fee when police respond to repeated false alarms. Show everyone how the system works and replace batteries when prompted.

Home security
questions

Not always. Monitoring suits people who travel often, have a busy household or want fire and CO alarms handled even when no one is home. If you're comfortable managing alerts yourself, a self-monitored system can cost less, and some let you add monitoring month to month later.

Usually, yes. Wireless DIY kits with adhesive mounts go up without drilling and come with you when you move. Check your lease and talk to your landlord before installing anything on the door, in shared hallways or outside the building.

Check the term, whether it renews automatically, who owns the equipment and how any early cancellation fee is calculated. Ask whether the monthly fee can go up and whether the service moves with you. Québec's Office de la protection du consommateur publishes information on service contracts and on contracts signed at your door.

It may. Some insurers offer a discount on home or tenant insurance for a monitored alarm or other safety devices. Ask your insurer what qualifies and whether they need a certificate from the alarm company.

It depends on the provider. Some transfer monitored service to your new home, while others treat a move as a cancellation. DIY systems usually come with you. If you're moving around July 1, ask early so your new address is covered from day one.
