The format matters less than who grants the credential, and whether the pace and total cost fit your life.
Side by side
The right level depends on what you need the credential to do. Credit loads in Québec are fairly standard, but always confirm with the institution.
| Credential | Typical length | Good for | Ask about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate | Usually 30 credits; often part-time alongside work | A targeted skill or a first step into a new field | Whether its credits can count toward a bachelor's later |
| Bachelor's degree | Usually 90 credits; longer at a part-time pace | Career changes, many professions and graduate study | Admission requirements and transfer credits |
| Master's degree | Usually 45 credits; often one to three years | Specializing, leadership roles and some regulated fields | Prerequisites and course-based vs thesis options |
| Short programs and micro-credentials | Varies; often a few courses over weeks or months | Upskilling quickly or testing a field before committing | Whether the credential is recognized or credit-bearing |
